1. Why Energy Audit?

With the opening up of the world markets manufacturers are faced with tough competition. Cost reduction measures are targeting all aspects of manufacturing activities like purchases, manpower, advertising etc. It is time to treat energy as an input raw material instead of an overhead and targeted accordingly in cost reductions efforts. Reduction in specific energy consumption is a direct consequence of an intelligently conducted energy audit resulting in reduced costs of production.

The availability of energy at all times is not assured; even now shedding of loads at peak demand times is being enforced. This affects the manufacturing activity. An intelligently conducted energy audit can extend considerable help in this regard.

The requirement of standby power generation sets is directly proportional to the effectiveness in energy utilization. Low energy efficiencies will result in very high capacity standby power generating sets.

Inefficient energy use often results in greater material wastes. In fact one of the tools of an energy audit is the assessment of wastes in a manufacturing stream. The curve of specific energy consumption versus the production figures and the scattering of points on it give important pointers to slack process controls. This is another cost reduction feature that an energy audit will result in apart from the direct saving in energy consumption.

An energy audit needs specialized experience and exposure to different aspects of energy efficiency. A good system designer will not necessarily be able to offer good energy efficiency but the reverse is true that an energy auditor needs to be a good system designer as well as being well versed in aspect of energy efficiency.

4. The statutory aspects...The Energy (Conservation) Act 2001 mandates designated consumers of energy to get regular energy audits carried out. Certain minimum specific energy consumption benchmarks are being set up under the mandate of this act and will need to be adhered to. Establishment having a connected load of 500 KVA and more automatically come under the category of designated consumers. The act is going to be mandatory very soon.
